General Mills Sees Growth in Cat Food and Fresh Pet Food

Sep 13, 2026

General Mills is seeing stronger momentum in cat food and fresh dog food as it adjusts its North American pet food portfolio and works to improve weaker areas of its traditional dog food business.

Speaking at the 2026 Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference on September 8, the company said its cat feeding business was delivering mid-single-digit growth. Premium brand Tiki Cat continued to grow at a double-digit rate, while Blue Buffalo Tastefuls was also recording mid-single-digit growth. General Mills said it plans to expand distribution and continue investing in innovation and marketing for its cat food portfolio.

Fresh dog food is another area showing strong momentum. General Mills said its Blue Buffalo Love Made Fresh refrigerated range recorded an 80% increase in retail sales during fiscal fourth quarter, followed by another 30% increase in fiscal first quarter 2027. The products are now available in approximately 6,000 refrigerated displays.

The company attributed the improvement partly to better supply chain management, packaging changes, distribution and in-store execution. General Mills has also introduced different formats for the fresh range, including resealable packaging designed to make the products easier for consumers to use.

However, performance across the pet portfolio remains mixed. Blue Buffalo Wilderness continues to face challenges in the traditional dog food category.
