Danish microalgae ingredients company Algiecel has opened a new production facility in Kalundborg, Denmark, to expand the supply of microalgae-based ingredients for pet food and cosmetics.
Located at Novonesis’ industrial site, the facility increases Algiecel’s production capacity nearly fivefold compared with its pilot system. The new reactor has a total volume of 5,500 litres, up from 700 litres in the pilot setup, and uses captured CO₂ from an on-site biogas plant to grow microalgae.
Algiecel expects to produce around 12 tonnes of microalgae biomass annually from 2027. Its ingredients are being developed for applications including fish-free omega-3 and other nutritional components for pet food.
For pet food manufacturers, microalgae could provide an additional source of marine nutrients and help diversify ingredient sourcing beyond conventional fish-based supply chains. However, wider adoption will depend on ingredient costs, product performance and the company’s ability to deliver consistent commercial volumes.
The new facility marks Algiecel’s move from pilot-scale development toward industrial production, with pet food among its target markets.
