Japanese food group Umios Corporation has acquired a 51% stake in Malaysian pet food manufacturer Pet World International (PWI) for approximately JPY 11.4 billion, strengthening its manufacturing and distribution base in Southeast Asia.
The transaction was completed through a newly established holding company as part of a strategic joint venture between Umios and Malaysia’s Wah Kong Corporation, according to an announcement published by Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama, on October 1, 2026.
PWI is a major participant in Malaysia’s dog and cat food market. The transaction announcement, citing NielsenIQ data, places the company second in the overall market and first among local companies. Its portfolio covers dry pet food across value and premium segments.
The company operates a pet food manufacturing facility certified under the BRC standard, employs approximately 350 people and distributes products through more than 10,000 physical retail outlets as well as its own e-commerce channels. PWI reported consolidated sales of approximately JPY 12.4 billion for the year ended September 2025, according to the transaction announcement.
For Umios, formerly known as Maruha Nichiro, the investment adds a Malaysian dry-food manufacturer to a pet food business that already includes Japan’s AIXIA Corporation and Thailand-based Southeast Asian Packaging and Canning Ltd. (SEAPAC). These businesses provide the group with a broader combination of product capabilities and international manufacturing operations.
The companies plan to combine their strengths in raw-material procurement, processing, product development and distribution. Umios has identified expansion in Asia as a priority for its pet food business, with the acquisition expected to support closer coordination of sales networks, product strategies and research and development.
For international buyers and suppliers, the deal is a development to monitor in Southeast Asian pet food manufacturing. A stronger regional production and distribution network could create future opportunities in product sourcing, packaging, ingredients and manufacturing services. However, no specific new supplier contracts, export destinations or product launches were confirmed in the completion announcement.
The next indicators will be how the partners integrate their operations and whether they announce additional manufacturing investment, new products or distribution agreements across regional markets.
