Retailers expand into Portugal

Sep 20, 2019
Retailers from Germany, France and Spain are looking to expand into Portugal, according to reports in the newsletter of PLMA, the Private Label Manufacturers Association, based in the Netherlands.

Aldi plans to triple the number of stores it has in Portugal, with the number climbing from 68 to more than 200 in less than five years.

Intermarché aims to allocate 200 mio euros for the opening of 105 stores by 2023. Last year the retailer invested around 30 mio euros and opened nine stores, and this year it intends to spend 60 mio euros and open 15 stores. The store expansion will be accompanied by a price reduction strategy.

Meanwhile Spanish cooperative Covirán has opened seven supermarkets in Portugal, bringing its store total to 283.
